ESC 2022
I made a Eurovision Song Contest post last year wo I figured I'd post one now too! Just some short opinions of the entries that made it to the finale (in performance order), and my top 5 :)

What I look for in an ESC song: I like music that is catchy, I prefer songs that have some folk or cultural elements instead if just generic pop that could be from anywhere, and although I really like the show element of ESC, I still usually vote for music as opposed to performance (songs that are good on their own when listened to even without seeing the visuals).

Czech Republic: I like how electronic this is. Nice beat. The melody itself fell a little flat for me (especially the chorus).
Romania: This was ridiculous but also actually pretty fun and catchy :D
Portugal: Pretty nice, emotional song
Finland: Our entry, so I'm biased  \o/ Well I love this band and I liked the song so ofc I was rooting for them, but it's a pretty generic rock song so I see why it didn't do that well.
Switzerland: I just don't really like ballads. I like the message and the performance was sweet, but the song itself is just so boring.
France: This was awesome!! Some sort of weird hypnotic electro folk, I'd definitely listen to this. Very energetic and interesting song, I loved this one and was stunned that it got almost no love from the juries or voters.
Norway: This was fun too, although the concept and performance definitely are the stars here. The song is pretty good too though and seems to be stuck in my mind now so it definitely works on some level, I just wish the chorus was less monotonous, I want to like this more than I do cause the idea is so cool.
Armenia: This is actually kind of the opposite of Norway in that first I was bothered by the bland visuals/performance that I didn't notice the song itself is pretty good. It's a bit too chill/calm to be among my favorites, but definitely easy to listen to.
Italy: This seems to have been one of the audience favorites, I don't see the appeal tbh, this was pretty boring for me other than the faster parts of the song which were ok.
Spain: This was really really good, super full of energy from start to finish and I'd definitely listen to this a lot.
The Netherlands: Charismatic singer but very boring song
Ukraine: Obviously the sympathy factor contributres to this win, but I don't really care because the song was really strong! I really dig the combination of an emotional folksy chorus and rap verses. This just worked for me, there were two songs I liked a bit more, but neither did very well, so I'm happy Ukraine won out of the realistic options.
Germany: This was nice, I tend to like lyrics that are about nostalgia so on that front this worked for me, I don't remember much of the song otherwise but I found it listeneable enough
Lithuania: This performance had some sort of retro pop charm to it, but the song itself was very bland imo so I was surprised it did so well
Azerbaijan: Great voice, but another boring ballad
Belgium: This took forever to really start, but once the beat kicks in it was quite catchy, although definitely in the "generic pop" category
Greece: Ugh, what. I didn't get this at all. The lyrics + costume had this creepy cult girl vibe and I kept wondering if it was intentional or not :D I don't remember the melody at all but this was definitely one of my least favorites this year.
Iceland: I like this type of music, really nice, calm folk, I'd listen to this any day but for an ESC winner I'm looking for something with a bit more energy
Moldova: Speaking of energy, YES!!! This was so much fun! \o/ I remember this same band from another ESC (2011?) and that song was great too, so I guess I should check out more of this band's music. Anyway, what a fun, catchy song that stood out and was definitely my top favorite this year!
Sweden: I liked this a lot, good melody, and the song grows nicely. Not original enough compared to some of other entries, but I'd listen to this.
Australia: Nice message of course but as a song this did nothing for me, another boring ballad
UK: I liked the space theme, the song was fine, somewhere in the middle of the pack for me, I was surprised it was such a huge favorite for the juries. My favorite thing was the performer's hair tbh.
Poland: If I have to choose a favorite from all the ballads it would be this one, cause I did like the emotion and the darkness of the song, but I'm sure I wouldn't get much out of this song without seeing the cool visuals and intense performance.
Serbia: This was super cool and interesting, in the semifinals I mostly just saw this as a weird artsy song and performance, but in the finals I listened to the music itself more and realized this is actually really catchy too. A good contender that keeps growing on me.
Estonia: This was fairly original and unexpected for an ESC song, there's not a lot of country rock there usually. The song itself was very simple, but nice enough.

PERSONAL TOP 5:
1. Moldova
2. France
3. Ukraine
4. Spain
5. Serbia

Also, an honorary mention to Albania which was my favorite song that didn't make it to the finale.

So fun to see someone was also watching it. It's such a crazy night onece a year :)

Finland - I was so shocked, becuse I know The Rasmus from the late 90's and early 2000, but it was really fun to see them here, and with a pretty good song too.
France - loved this one so much. I like folk music also, so this was really up my alley, also they did something really different (most of the time it's a ballad from Them), and in Breton, amazing!
Norway - loved the look, and the song was so fun, but I felt like the energy was missing a bit.
Italy - yes! And as much as I loved Maneskin last year this one was bland, pale in comparison. But supposedly they didn't want to win, so...
Ukraine - I really like the rap/folk combo. The Chorus is amazing, and I'm really enjoying the vibe.
Greece - yes, all of this. I honestly didn't undersatnd why this got so many point (mostly from the jury, and I don't think they know stuff about the music) :)
Moldova - it was just so funny. I has so many Folk version of "Love Shack" feels. Also they were so energetic with so many boring ballads, that they really stood out for me.
Poland - lol, now I'm biased...but for our standards it was really a strong performance. The guy is from a very musically inclined family. And we didn't get to the finals for the last 5 years so this was an event :) It was a bit meh for my taste of music, though I liked the opera parts. The radio version is better in my opinion. Because here if stripped from all the visuals it was just not that strong.
Serbia - I had no idea what was going on...but the mellody and chorus was really catchy :)

OMG, my mind is blown - I had no idea you were Polish, based on your username I've thought you'd be from a Spanish-speaking country for sure! This is super cool to know, thanks for sharing! :)

Wow I didn't realize it had been that long for you since the last time in the finals - I remember a lot of previous ESC songs but I tend to forget which country they're from, so stats like this totally escape me. I'm super glad you made it this year, and deservedly so since the performance was impactful even for someone who normally doesn't like the ballads that much. Finland doesn't typically do well either (we've been making it to the finals a lot but then being one of the less successful ones there), but at least we've got that one win in 2006 so I can't complain too much xD

I agree with a lot of these assessments! Moldova really stodd out and so did a lot of others so now I'm considering actually buying the cd for the first time since 2011 (I used to do it every year since 2006, but then there were a few meh years and I lost the habit).
